Knowing and Understanding Oneself during Middle and Late Adolescence

SELF-CONCEPT

Self-concept is the way people think about themselves. It shapes and defines who we are, the decisions we make, and the relationships we form.
Self-concept is our individual perception of our behavior, abilities, and unique characteristics; a mental picture of who you are as a person.
Carl Rogers identifies three parts of self-concept:
Self-image - How you see yourself.
Self-esteem - How much you value yourself.
Ideal self - How you wish you could be.
According to Carl Rogers, congruence is when a person's self-concept matches reality.
Incongruence is when there is a mismatch between the ideal self and actual experience.

Why is Self-Concept Important?

Knowing who you are will help you feel worth and value.
Accepting yourself makes it easier for others to accept you.
Learning about yourself helps you make choices that direct your life.
