TEXT

  • A simple and flexible format for presenting information or conveying ideas, whether written, printed, or displayed on-screen.
  • Defined as any "human-readable sequence of characters" that can form intelligible words (Rouse, 2015).
  • Text can vary in length, from a single sentence or phrase to lengthy news articles or investigative reports. Regardless of length, a text is always carefully written with the intent of sending a specific message to the target audience.

Typeface

  • Also called font, font type, or type, refers to the representation or style of text in digital format.
  • Comprised of alphabets, numbers, punctuation marks, symbols, and other special characters.

Various Typefaces

  1. SERIF
    • Connotes formality and readability in large amounts of text.
    • Usually used for the body text of books, newspapers, magazines, and research publications.
    • Gives a classic or elegant look when used for titles or headings.
      • Examples: Times New Roman, Garamond, Baskerville.
  2. SANS SERIF
    • Brings a clean or minimalist look to the text.
    • Used for clear and direct meaning, such as road signage, building directories, or nutrition facts in food packages.
    • Provides a modern look, primarily used in webpage design.
      • Examples: Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma, Verdana, Calibri.
  3. SLAB SERIF
    • Carries a solid or heavy look to text.
    • Can be used for large advertising signs on billboards.
      • Examples: Rockwell, Playbill, Amasis MT Pro Black, Bauhaus 93, Bodoni MT Black, Cooper Black, Elephant, Georgia Pro Black, Gill Sans Nova Ultra Bold, Goudy Stout.
  4. SCRIPT
    • Draws much attention to itself due to its brush-like strokes.
    • Must be used sparingly and not for large body text.
    • Typically used in wedding invitations or other formal events.
      • Examples: Edwardian, Vladimir, Bradley Hand ITC, Brush Script MT, Dreaming Outloud Script, French Script MJ, Fave Script Bold Pro, Cochoreb Script Latin Pre.
  5. DECORATIVE
    • Caters to a wide variety of emotions such as celebration, fear, horror, etc.
    • Themes can include cowboys, circus, holidays, summer, and kiddie themes.
      • Examples: Chiller, Jokerman, Curlz, Harlow Solid Italic, Informal Roman, Gigi, Blackadder ITC, Harrington, Matura M7 Script Capitals, Juice ITC, Old English Text MT, Archment, ST@aliyun.
