Definition

Outlining is a written plan that serves as a skeleton for the paragraphs you write.

It is a crucial component of academic writing, providing a roadmap for organizing ideas and presenting them in a logical sequence.

Why Create an Outline?

1. Outlining is a tool used in the writing process to help organize ideas, visualize a paper's potential structure, and further develop points.
2. An outline allows the writer to understand how to connect information to support the thesis statement and claims of the paper.
3. An outline provides a space for the writer to consider ideas easily without needing to write full paragraphs.

Guidelines in Outlining

• Place the title at the center above the outline.
• Every level of the outline must have at least two items.
• Put a period (.) after each numeral and letter.
• Indent each new level of the outline.
• All items of one kind (Roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic numerals, etc.) should line up with each other.

Formats of Outlining

1. Decimal Outline

Uses a system of decimal notation that clearly shows how every level of the outline relates to the larger whole.

2. Alphanumeric Outline

Uses letters and numbers to organize ideas. This format is commonly used due to its convenience and easy recognition of sections.

Types of Formal Outline

1. Topic Outline

Uses words and phrases. It is shorter and easier to make.

2. Sentence Outline

Uses full sentences.
