Definition

Thesis Statement: The central idea of the text.

Summarizes the topic and arguments of the writer about the topic.

Differences Between Thesis Statement & Topic Sentence

  • Thesis Statement: Refers to the central idea of the whole paper.
  • Topic Sentence: Refers to the main idea of one paragraph only.

Characteristics of a Thesis Statement

  • ✅ TRUE: A Thesis Statement should reflect the main idea of an essay.
  • ❌ FALSE: A Thesis Statement is the first sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.
  • ✅ TRUE: A Thesis Statement makes a claim that other people may dispute, challenge, or oppose.

Types of Thesis Statements

Explicit

  • Straightforward and obviously written in the text.
  • Usually found at the end of the introduction.

Implicit

  • Not written in the text.
  • Readers formulate the Thesis Statement based on their understanding of the text.

HOW TO WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT?

Parts of a Thesis Statement

  1. Topic – Subject of the text.
  2. Position – Your stand on the topic.
  3. Reason/s – Explanation and justification of your position.
  4. Concession – An opposing viewpoint on the topic.

Example

  • Topic: Regulating Children’s Mobile Gaming
  • Position: Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming.
  • Reason/s:
    • It inhibits social interaction.
    • It shortens children’s attention span.
    • It’s not always intellectually stimulating.
  • Concession: Mobile gaming can be educational.

MODELS OF THESIS WRITING

  1. Basic Thesis Statement (Topic + Position)
    Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming.
  2. Thesis Statement with Concession (Thesis Statement + Concession)
    Even though mobile gaming can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming.
  3. Thesis Statement with Concession and Reason (Thesis Statement + Concession + Reason/s)
    Even though mobile gaming can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming because it inhibits social interaction, shortens children’s attention span, and is not always intellectually stimulating.
  4. Thesis Statement with Reason/s (Thesis Statement + Reason/s)

INDUCTIVE VS. DEDUCTIVE WRITING

Inductive Writing (Specific → General)

  • Starts with specific details, examples, and illustrations.
  • Concludes with a general statement.

Deductive Writing (General → Specific)

  • Starts with a general statement, premise, principle, or law.
  • Followed by specific details.

CONCLUSION
